Medicare Supplement Plans (A-N)
Medicare covers many health care services and supplies, but there are many costs it doesn’t cover. A Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy is health insurance sold by private insurance companies to fill gaps in Medicare coverage.
Medigap policies help pay your share (coinsurance, copayments, or deductibles) of the costs of Medicare-covered services. Some Medigap policies cover certain costs not covered by Original Medicare.
Medigap policies don’t work with any other type of health insurance including:
Medicare Advantage Plans
Medicare Advantage (Part C) health insurance program of managed health care (Preferred Provider Organization(PPO) or Health Maintenance organization(HMO)) that serves as a compliment with "Original Medicare" (Parts A & B) Medicare benefits.
Most Medicare Advantage plans (sometimes referred to a "Part C") include the Part D prescription drug benefit plan.
Medicare Part D Prescription Plans
Medicare Part D, also called the Medicare prescription drug benefit, is a federal program to subsidize the costs of prescription drugs for Medicare beneficiaries.
Medicare Part D plans are usually offered two different ways:
- As a standalone plan to add coverage to Original Medicare Parts A and B and to complement a Medicare Supplement plan.
- As part of a Medicare Advantage (Part C) Plan
Medicare Part D plans have a specific list of drugs they cover.
